[Yohe] News broke that Mario Lemieux was coming out of retirement 20 years ago today. After not playing for nearly four years, he produced 35 goals and 76 points in 43 games, at age 35. In the heart of the dead puck era. No player in hockey history could have pulled that off. Only him.
For someone who’s regarded as an unquestionable Top 10 best of all time, his career and how he accomplished what he did is still sometimes overlooked.
In 1992 this dude GOT FUCKING CANCER mid-season, underwent chemo, came back and reclaimed the scoring title.
In 1993 he underwent back surgery because he couldn’t tie his skates, took time off BECAUSE HE HAD FUCKING CANCER and still won the scoring title.
And that’s just the first half of his career before he did all that again and then saved the entire team.
